Longtime NBA coach Brendan Malone dies at 84

Father of Denver Nuggets coach Michael Malone was an assistant on Pistons' back-to-back championship teams

Brendan Malone helped the Detroit Pistons win the NBA championship in 1989 and 1990 as an assistant coach.

Brendan Malone, a longtime NBA coach and father of Denver Nuggets coach Michael Malone, died on Monday. He was 84.

Brendan Malone was an assistant coach on the Detroit Pistons' back-to-back championship teams in 1989 and 1990. He also served as head coach of the Pistons from 1995 to 1997.

In addition to his time with the Pistons, Malone also coached the Cleveland Cavaliers, Dallas Mavericks, and New Jersey Nets.

Brendan Malone's son, Michael, is the current head coach of the Denver Nuggets. Michael Malone released a statement on his father's passing, saying, "My father was the best coach I ever had. He taught me everything I know about the game of basketball. He was also the best father I could have asked for. I love him and will miss him dearly."

Brendan Malone is survived by his wife, Penny, and his three children, Michael, Patrick, and Erin.
