Idea rejected: Council votes no for artists to use vacant Freo buildings

Council votes against proposal to allow artists to use vacant buildings in Fremantle

The City of Fremantle has rejected a proposal to allow artists to use vacant buildings in the city as work and exhibition spaces.

The proposal was put forward by the Freo Arts Alliance, which argued that the use of vacant buildings would provide much-needed space for artists and help to revitalize the city's arts scene.

However, the council voted against the proposal, citing concerns about the impact on the city's heritage and the potential for noise and disruption.

The decision has been met with disappointment by the Freo Arts Alliance, which says it will continue to lobby the council to reconsider its position.

"We are very disappointed with the council's decision," said Freo Arts Alliance spokesperson Emily Pepper.

"We believe that the use of vacant buildings would provide much-needed space for artists and help to revitalize the city's arts scene."

The council's decision has also been criticized by some members of the community, who say it demonstrates a lack of support for the city's arts community.

"The council's decision is a slap in the face to the city's arts community," said local resident John Smith.

"It shows that the council is not interested in supporting the arts, and that it is more concerned with preserving the city's heritage than with providing opportunities for artists."
