Successor to the Eternal Leader
After Kim Il Sung, the "Eternal Leader" of North Korea, died in 1994, the presidency remained vacant. His son, Kim Jong-il, assumed the title of Supreme Leader, a position he held until his own death in 2011. Kim Jong-un, the third-generation leader of the Kim dynasty, was then appointed as the new Supreme Leader of North Korea.
